Keep Your Wardrobe Environmentally Friendly
Buy
used clothes from thrift shops in your neighborhood or have clothes
swapping parties with friends and family. This is recycling at its
best…inexpensive and not resource intensive.
Eco-
friendly laundering. The washing of clothes is far more harmful to
the environment than the production of clothes. There are many ways
you can improve your laundry practices:
The
sniff test is not a bad thing! Wash clothes less often to save
water, electricity and detergent. If it doesn’t stink or have
stains on it then it probably doesn’t need to be washed.
Use
energy efficient washing machines to save even more water,
electricity…and even money.
Use
biodegradable and phosphate free detergents. Phosphates get into
natural water supplies and change the ecosystem for the worse.
“Solar
powered” driers are available for as little as $2 at your
local hardware store…line dry when you can.
Buy
clothes made of recycled or organic fibers. Natural fabric that is
not organic is actually far worse for the environment than
synthetic. The pesticides used on cotton are horrible for the earth.
Organic natural fabric and polyester fabric made from recycled
bottles or P.E.T. are good alternatives.
